Our First
Meeting
It all
started when I volunteered to record a video testimony of our
friends at the beach. Our very good friends, Mike and
Deenee Otake, have been doing outreaches with our friends
at the beach for a while now. They picked me up one afternoon
and we headed out to meet Margaret, Keoki, and Richard. The
video shoot went well and their testimony was played at
our church sharing their story with others. It is hoped
that more of our friends would be involved in helping others.

Our New
Friends
Pictured above, from left to right, is Keoki, Margaret, and Ivy.
Richard, whom we met on our first visit with them, wasn't avail that night.
We met Ivy for
the first time that night. These are friends we have
come to know and care about. Verna and I have
pledged to lend a helping hand simply because we are
blessed with so much and yet our fellow brothers and
sisters aren't.
You see, while we sleep cozy in our soft beds,
simply reaching over for more blankets, our
friends are sleeping in their cars, or on the beach.
When they reach over to grab for more cover, they
may be reaching for a wondering
centipede instead.
Wanting To Do
More
There was a self
powered flashlight I saw in Costco that never needs
batteries. It also had
a AM/FM radio, and siren built in. We
purchased a few of them for our friends.
Verna thought it would be nice to purchase
some plastic boxes and fill them with other items
such as towels, a tooth brush, tooth
paste, soap, wipes, and other things.
On the way to
the beach we picked up a bucket of chicken for them as well.

Margaret watches intently as I explained how the
flashlight radio works. Verna took the pictures you see
here. Not bad... camera girl! As you can see
it was getting dark and knew the flash light would come in
handy. Hmmmm who was it that said, "And let there be Light"..
Getting the picture?
The youngest
gal, Ivy, talked of how a little pond full of fish and life could be
destroyed by simply throwing expired flashlight batteries into
it. Because of that they hated batteries. They would much
prefer candles before flashlights.
Ah.. good question.. what else could they use? What's on
their wish list?
We learned
that many of the homeless were simply at the low crossroads of life.
Margaret has her car to get around and yet there's no home
to go to end the end of the day.
Richard once worked as a graphic artist with a advertising
company but lost his job. Even if you get a job, the rent is so
high here in Hawaii, many have no choice but to live on the
beach.
They do their best to keep the
camp site clean, that's why they need more rakes, dust pans and
trash bags. They see commercial trucks coming into the
beach area to dump old tires, batteries and other junk. They
often get blamed for this and won't report it for fear of
retaliation.
Margaret told us that
there is some kind of
infectious spores in the air.
You'll get infected easily.
